Installative diptych, 240m galvanized steel chain (2.80×1.90m), text on photo paper, A4, 4 steel nails, 2019
Impressions
The snake is a symbol of control society. In the installation, the material aesthetics of the steel chains, a material that conveys hardness and threat, are transformed into an aesthetic that makes the material appear gentle and playful. It is a visualization of control society. Inspired by Deleuze’s concept of the panopticon as a societal form that surveils everything and promises freedom through its reduction. This allegeded freedom is labeled as security. However, it is a security that suffocates, a security constituted by fear.
On the print there is a text dealing with the transformation of society through the internet. The transformation of the world from analog to digital, but also from alphabetical to binary. The text uses language as code, which is treated like a photograph through its presentation and materiality.
